Is COVID responsible for pediatric ICU cases? Yes…But it’s not how you think

We’ve all heard it – the numerous news reports about how the newest COVID-19 variants are breaking through vaccines, but even worse, now the nation’s kids, who previously weren’t very affected by COVID-19, are ending up in the ICU. It’s a very scary picture to paint. Hearing things like this makes parents second guess not getting the vaccine and letting their guard down about forcing masks on kids in schools ALL DAY! But what if that was only part of the truth?

It isn’t a lie from the media that children are increasingly ending up in ICUs across the country positive with COVID-19. So what is it that isn’t being flashed with bright lights and scary headlines? Would the media and government officials really hold back on the best ways to keep our kids safe and healthy? If it means their COVID-19 guidelines, lockdowns, masks, etc. were the REAL reason for kids in the ICUs across the county, you better believe they don’t want you to know.

In June of this year, the media began circulating all kinds of articles, starting with a surge of cases in Mississippi where children were being admitted to ICU with COVID. I urge you to read those stories a little closer and ask another question, too, “Were these children positive for RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus)?” In many of these stories, the children were positive for COVID, but also RSV. Want to know what else happened in June? The CDC quietly issued an EMERGENCY WARNING about an insurgence of RSV cases across the country. How many times has that been broadcasted?

Of course, the CDC does not indicate whatsoever that their recommended COVID-19 guidelines could have this kind of impact. After all, they have been telling everyone that these guidelines were to keep our children safe at school! Currently there is an early release letter on the CDC website from Japan, “Resurgence of Respiratory Syncytial Virus Infections during COVID-19 Pandemic, Tokyo, Japan.” Contained within this letter is a very important admission from the National Center for Global Health and Medicine, Tokyo, Japan:

“The emergence of RSV epidemics after the COVID-19 pandemic, appearing in different seasons and on a different scale to previous trends, has been observed in other regions, including the Americas and Australia (9,10), and the Tokyo epidemic is therefore not unique. Nevertheless, various local factors such as nonpharmaceutical interventions, travel restrictions, viral competition, and school and nursery closures are likely to have played a role. It remains to be seen whether a similar trend will be observed with other respiratory viral infections such as influenza. New epidemics may increase the already high medical burden and cause further delays in diagnosis amid the continuing pandemic.”

While the early release letter does discuss Japan’s situation, it indicates America as well as Australia being in similar situations. Below is a graph of RSV positivity rates in America from The National Respiratory and Enteric Virus Surveillance System (NREVSS):

Everyone has been doing their best to protect their children during these times. Parents try to balance their family’s physical health and mental health – it’s been a long “two weeks to flatten the curve.” The CDC and our government officials need to be completely transparent and honest. With so many parents trusting the CDC, to be expected because we aren’t all virologists and epidemiologists, this kind of information could save a child’s life.
Maybe you have a compromised immune system or someone else in the family so you masks and vaccines are a must in your family and for your situation – we support you. If you or your child that has a medical condition that makes it so you cannot or should not wear a mask or get vaccinated – we support you. Maybe you’re someone who simply just doesn’t want to – we support you.
